Jack Springer
Multitalented, quick-footed, effortlessly stylish, and contagious sense of humor are all descriptions you may find attached to Jack Springer [or more commonly known as “Bubba Jackson”]. Equally impressive on camera as he is behind, Jack doubles as both skateboarder and filmmaker. He has starred in, filmed, edited and directed multiple projects such as Please Enjoy Your Stay. Jack is one to keep an eye on.
He has been stacking clips for a video part set to release with our new boards. In anticipation for his part, I hit Jack with some questions to get a sneak peak for what we might expect.
Q: How long have you been working on this project?
Jack: “Since quarantine started — I got my first clip toward it on April 4th… so like two months?”
For context, Jack spent over a year putting together his last part. This is not to say he has skimped on his current project — rather quite the opposite. It is a testament to his progression. Jack from last year, versus him now, is night and day; truly an inspiring coming of age story blossoming through his skateboarding.
Q: Did getting on Still change your motivation?
Jack: “Yeah, definitely! I feel like I am filming for something.”
Jack was a perfect fit for Still. His immersive sense of skateboarding culture immediately grabbed my attention. From his ability on the board, to his eye for film and editing aesthetic, to his sense of fashion and taste in music; Jack knows how to convey a feeling.
Q: What brand influenced you the most?
Jack: “FORMER — everything from the people behind it, to the graphics, to the clothing. I have always been inspired by Dylan Rieder and Austyn Gillette, but I am equally stoked on Dane Reynolds and Craig Anderson as well. I grew up around my dad surfing, and he opened my eyes to how Dane and Craig to surfing are like the Dylan and Austyn to skating. I think that is a really interesting dynamic.”
Q: Didn’t you go to the their store grand opening in LA?
Jack: “Yeah! Funny story actually… Haha, the event was advertised as 21+ [I am only 20], but my friends and I assumed if was a formality they needed to include on the flyer for legal reasons. When we showed up, we were greeted by a big security guard who asked for our tickets and ID’s. We had tickets, but only one of us was over 21. Austyn Gillette’s [co-founder of FORMER] brother popped his head out of the gate to let one of his friends in and saw us sitting out front. He checked if we needed anything, and we asked if he could get us in. He responded by saying, ‘Let me ask my brother.’ He came back like ten minutes later with Austyn and he said, ‘Are you guys the under-agers?’ He proceeded to not only let us in, but give us a private tour of the space and hook us up with some free FORMER merch. Could not have been a better experience… coolest dudes.”
Q: You mentioned Dylan and Austyn… Do you have any influences people may not expect?
Jack: “Spike Jonze. I am inspired by how he went from shooting skate videos to feature films. Pretty Sweet is my favorite skate video, and his directing influenced the way I approach my own projects. With Spike, it’s more than just a skate video — there is production value.”
Q: Where do you see yourself shining in this industry?
Jack: “I want to be equally good at skating and filmmaking. There are amazing filmers who happen to skate, and vice versa, but it’s rare for someone to be known for both.”
